ALTERNATIVE ENERGY

One only needs to make one trip to the gas station to fill up the tank to know that we have a problem regarding energy and the sources of energy. When we factor in the damage that combustible fuel is doing to the ozone layer, the rise in home heating costs and our dependence on countries, which are not always friendly to us, the problem reaches crisis proportions.

But of most concern is this: Even if all the problems mentioned above were somehow alleviated, there remains the fact that most of the fuels upon which our very lives and economic structures depend are going to run out. Some scientists believe sooner than we think. We must find alternative energy sources. These will no doubt include solar power, hydo power, wind power and other sources that have not yet been discovered or developed.

Each of these factors has a down side, or have kinks to be worked out. Solar power can be expensive, especially in the conversion of old equipment or homes and may need supplementation in northern climates. Sites that are most likely to provide good sources of hydropower may already be maximized and the building of more of the huge dams needed to harness this energy may be environmentally unsound. Wind power advocates must answer concerns about noise and environmental issues around windmill "farms."

But if we mean to survive and thrive we must solve these problems. As for that tank in your automobile, how about a trip to a salad oil station to fill up?
