RECREATION

  In spite of the rise in gas prices, which some predicted would adversely affect family vacations; so far it appears that this has not happened.

  One reason for this may be that people have come to realize how precious are the few years when children are old enough to take an interest in, and to remember, places that they have been and are still young enough that work and other commitments do not keep them tied down.  Some of the fondest family memories are of visits to parks, sports arenas, camping sites and nature preserves where families have been able to have adventures together.

  All year long, very often, both parents are working and kids are involved in sports and school activities, which make time together as a family a hit-or-miss thing.  But a family vacation can be a time in which space is created for true bonding and interaction.

  Why, look at the word itself and it is clear what the possibilities can be.  The word “recreation” contains its own meaning – to re-create.  Re-create what?  Closeness, companionship, respect, communication, joint learning and experiences – in short, all of the things that we hope a family will provide.  

  But families have individual members, of course, and each of those members have their own tastes and ideas about what constitutes recreation for them.  Mom may be interested in historic sites, Dad may like hunting or fishing, one child may want to go to the seashore, another to the mountains, and another to amusement parks.  Research and discussion and planning may be one of the most important parts of the trip.  It may be that each year one person gets his or her preference with side trips to satisfy the others.  Or it may be that there is a place, which satisfies everyone’s tastes.  Half the fun may be finding this out!
