When did people first become interested in sports? Who can imagine how far back it goes? We know that the first recorded Olympics were held as early as 800 BCE, so we can gather that sports existed a very long time before they got THAT organized. I bet some Neanderthal guys tried to kick around a rock and soon began to look for something softer and easier to handle. Maybe something that bounced. We can only guess. But some things we do know. For one sure thing, America is a sports-minded country. Most people have a favorite - baseball, football, hockey, basketball - they're the biggest and within those categories most people have a favorite team. The rest of the world goes nuts over soccer and our middle school kids play it, but we have never gotten as excited about the World Cup as the rest of planet Earth seems to. Who knows why? Then there is racing - car racing, that is. NASCAR, Formula One. Oh yes, horse racing is big in some ways, but it has a reputation for being either for the rich or for the down-and-out guys who spend their last dollar on a bet at the track or, more likely, at OTB. We watch a lot of sports and we play a lot of sports. Whether it's a softball team coached by a Dad or a couple of kids (and maybe a parent too) playing a game of HORSE with a basketball and a hoop nailed up over the garage door. In the typical movie scene it is the common way for Dads to get involved with their kids. And what is Mom doing? Transporting, of course, and cheering from the stands! Like most movie clichés, there may be some truth in this and some fiction, but for sure if you put together kids and any kind of a ball - large or small, round or pointy - participating or watching -- good things will happen. (Of course with hockey it's a puck, not a ball, but the principle is the same!)
What can the Internet offer as a contribution to this activity? Just everything - sports tickets, events, shows, statistics, player information, scheduling - you name it, its there. Get into sports, its an American thing, it's a Planet Earth thing, it's a happy human thing!
